This page covers the requirements for initial Windows setup before proceeding with a Toniq installation
Please refer to our Computer Requirements and Operating System Requirements to ensure your new computer is fit for purpose.
Windows Settings
Quick check list
- Power Options Sleep: Never
- Regional Settings & Formatting: English (New Zealand)
-
Windows local user: Match existing username and password as other computers
- Cannot log in with Microsoft account
Sleep
Toniq requires that the computers do not go to sleep during operation. We recommend disabling sleep mode. The Toniq Server PC must never go to sleep as this causes all other workstations Toniq applications to stop working.
Regional Settings
Toniq is designed with New Zealand in mind, Date formats within Windows should be set for English (New Zealand) to comply with this. This includes the "System" account.
Firewall
Toniq configures the Windows Firewall for use with our programs. For third-party firewalls please refer to our Antivirus / Firewall Software article on Firewall rules and Antivirus software.
User Account Control (UAC)
Toniq requires UAC to be disabled to allow Toniq to provide remote support using Teamviewer Quick Support. This is disabled automatically when our software is installed, but a restart is required for the change to take effect.
Authentication
Toniq software uses Windows authentication to grant or deny the running of the Toniq applications. This requires all users on workstations to be logged on with an account that can authenticate to the server, and the server’s background processes back to the workstations. This is easily achieved when the Toniq Server PC and the workstations are logging on with the same user/password credentials.
Workgroup environment
Any username/password combination must be set up on the workstation for the user, and the server.
It may be sufficient to have the same username and password for all staff across all computers. Otherwise, each user/password for the workstations will need to be configured on the server, and the server’s username/password on each workstation.
The users credentials (username/password) must be the same across the network. Windows does not support one username having different passwords on different computers to authenticate across the network.
Example of 2 user credentials used: If the site has a user named “Pharmacy” for most workstations with user permissions, and a user named “Admin” with Administrator privileges for running payroll and other functions on one computer. The computer user credential configuration could look like below. All the computers log in as Pharmacy for day to day use.
Computer | Users required | Password | Notes |
PC1 |
Admin Pharmacy |
Sec0ndPass GoodP@ss1 |
Staff log on as Pharmacy. Admin required as the Toniq server components will connect as this. |
PC2 |
Admin Pharmacy |
Sec0ndPass GoodP@ss1 |
Staff log on as Pharmacy. Admin required as the Toniq server components will connect as this. |
MANAGER | Admin | Sec0ndPass |
Pharmacy not required as no connections are made as this user. Authenticates as Admin user between SERVER and this PC. |
SERVER |
Admin Pharmacy |
Sec0ndPass GoodP@ss1 |
Toniq software runs as Admin. Pharmacy required as the PC1 and PC2 workstations connect to this pc as Pharmacy. As this PC is also used for day to day, they log on as Pharmacy. |
Account permissions
The Toniq software must initially be installed as a user with administrative privileges on each computer. This is a Windows security restriction.
For day-to-day use, user-level permissions are all that is required.
Configuration changes, such as printer reconfiguration, may require administrative privileges. Therefore, it is recommended that someone on site know the login details for an administrative user.
Domain environment
Logging on as a domain user will achieve this as the domain controllers manage authentication between all computers.
Microsoft Accounts
Windows does not support the use of Microsoft accounts for authenticating across the network, therefore Toniq cannot support Microsoft accounts. This is why Local User accounts are required.
Changing password
If the password for the user that runs the Toniq server components is changing, all server Toniq processes must be reconfigured to keep Toniq software operational. Please contact Toniq support for assistance before changing the password.
In a workgroup environment, because the password must stay the same across the machines, the password for a given user must be changed on all computers at the same time. The user should then log off and on again to finish the change on each pc.
In a domain environment, the password is managed by the domain controllers. It is still recommended to log off and on again, wherever that user is logged on.
